The Longer Version

LEELA means divine play, and the play treats life as exactly that; a sacred, messy game where nothing is wasted. Themes of belonging, identity and the stories we inherit run through the piece.

The show is an invitation to explore the depths of our humanity, to laugh, to cry, to be angry, to feel deeply. Ultimately, each audience member can find a mirror in LEELA, a reflection of our complexities, our strengths, our weaknesses, and our unparalleled potential for joy and transformation.

Along the road, poetry becomes Sean’s compass: Shakespeare, John Donne, Wordsworth, Lou Reed and ancient Sanskrit thread through the narrative, offering both provocation and consolation.

The audience is asked what happens when a person stops chasing the approved version of success, and instead treats life with the reverence and respect that it deserves. LEELA asks each of us to fully appreciate and accept our own crooked, hopeful journey through life.

Sea Dog Theater’s Spring 2026 season gave LEELA a strong platform as part of its inaugural Spotlight Series, placing the play within a season built around rigorous, actor-driven storytelling. Described by Sea Dog as "a raw, luminous 65-minute journey through violence, poetry, love and awakening", LEELA stood out for its blend of grit, humour and spiritual reflection. Its inclusion signalled real confidence in the work’s artistic value and audience appeal. The season also carried extra prestige through the participation of Tony Award winner Bill Irwin, who appeared in Sea Dog’s reading of Will Eno’s Title and Deed.
